These oar powered craft offer a stealthy and peaceful approach to a day on the water. Rafts also give access to deeper channels, weed beds, muddy flats, and hidden corners that are otherwise difficult or impossible to reach on foot. Fly Fishing lakes have long been in my blood being very fortunate to have a father who loved fishing lakes. This meant that most weekends in summer we would spend time fishing lakes as a family. Whilst the main focus of my guiding operation is backcountry rivers, lakes can provide fantastic all year round fishing and are a great places to both guide experts and teach beginners.

We are blessed with many different types of lakes from small intimate tarns to large alpine lakes in scenic high country settings, which commonly hold Rainbow and Brown Trout of good size. I also offer two very specialized options: the first being mountain lake Brook Char, a very fun and unique species to target, secondly fishing for large Searun Brown Trout in coastal lakes, lagoons and estuaries. These are some of the largest most impressive wild trout to be found any place in New Zealand that often occur in groups foraging on the many baitfish. We have some streamer fishing that can be nothing short of spectacular but many times we sight fish using Nymphs and at times dry flies.

I take great delight in sharing very innovative and highly original fly and streamer patterns and have several unique techniques that can be used. The angler is bound to learn a lot and take forward some new adaptive approaches . Lake fishing, depending upon the time of year and mood of the day, can involve a mix of both sight and blind fishing using Dry Flies { we get some lush Beetle and Cicada hatches} Nymphs and streamers. I am happy to supply all gear and cater for all levels and have all year round options .

Ronan Creane

I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. We have since filmed another episode for the second series which was big hit, representing the series at the “Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival”. At sixteen feet long and seven feet wide and with two stand-up casting braces, it’s a roomy and comfortable casting platform. The centre rowing seat allows our guides to control the boat as we drift downstream. Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Mike is also an active member of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Board. He guides primarily out of River Birches Lodge which is also situated on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Greg Gardiner

Let Greg be your guide along the world famous Brown Trout rivers of the upper South Island of New Zealand. Taking in the rivers of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Hanmer regions. Greg over the last 8 years has built up an extensive knowledge of the better fish producing rivers in these regions, and combined with an attitude that what you want as an angler comes first will make your trip a very memorable one indeed. Greg prefers to do a multi day tour starting in Christchurch and working up through to Nelson taking in different rivers on the way. He is also quite happy to work the other way i.e. picking up in Nelson and working down to Christchurch. He believes this method gives greater flexibility as well as a good variety of different environments in which to fish. Greg and his family own a piece of farmland in Murchison (1.5 hours from Nelson) which is right on the bank of the Maruia river (the Maruia is a well known trout river in the top of the south island with plenty of 3-5lb Brown Trout). They have a modest 3 bedroom farmhouse on the property, which means you can stay close to the action.

The fishing in the Mt. Brent Beadle

Brent Beadle is based at Moana on the shores of beautiful Lake Brunner where the trout die of old age and has been guiding around the Lake Brunner area for 15 years. All his boats have a current survey and Brent has Department of Conservation permits to fish the area. Brent often drifts the lake edge sight casting to prime fish as well as helifishing trips, a great way to fish the head waters of the regions rivers and overnight stays in wilderness river valleys with excellent accommodation available if required. Craig Aspinall

On leaving school I trained as a carpenter in Wellington, when work moved me to Taupo for a few building projects. Then in the late 80s, I teamed up with my brother Mark Aspinall to guide in the Taupo region. After building up my guiding experience my brother introduced me to Poronui lodge in the early 90s where now I do the bulk of my guiding during the summer fishing season. I am currently the longest serving guide at Poronui and enjoy seeing my repeat clients each season. Mark Aspinall

I started flyfishing in the rivers around the Dunedin district where I was brought up, eventually moving to Taupo to join what was then called the NZ Forest Service as a Ranger Trainee. On leaving the Forest Service I started my own guiding business in the early 80s andin 1987 I joined Simon Dickie and Paddy Clark in the second year of operations at Poronui fishing lodge. There I gained most of my knowledge of the Central North Island back country rivers. Around 1999 I became head guide until Feb 2011 when I left Poronui to concentrate to my own guiding business based out of Taupo. Currently, I have 3 guides on the MA team they are Dave Wood, Duncan Mc Donald and Craig Aspinall. I guide all year round but specialize in back country rivers in the summer time. I guide all levels of clients, from first time people that have never held a fly rod to seasoned experts. Nigel Birt

Chris Bell

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.

Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.

If the weather dictates better fishing conditions on the South Island’s West Coast, Chris will often be happy to travel across to fish the various lakes of this region even for just a day, to find better sight fishing opportunities for his clients. Chris’s guiding business consistently utilises careful “Catch and Release” even in the lake fisheries to help to protect existing wild fish populations, into which there can sometimes be little recruitment.
