Born and raised in Canterbury I was always drawn to water. In fact dad always thought I was part fish. I grew up on the banks of a local river where my grandparents owned a family batch. As a young fella I would often watch grandad and his mates casting dry flies to large brown trout. Grandad’s love and respect for rivers was infectious and fly fishing soon became an obsession for me too.
Over 35 years I have gained extensive knowledge of local streams, rivers and lakes. The Canterbury region offers a multitude of angling opportunities from stalking mountain streams to streamer fishing for sea run trout. I have been guiding professionally since 1999 and I feel privileged and proud to every time I take people into the New Zealand backcountry and hunt out fine brown and rainbow trout.

Let Greg be your guide along the world famous Brown Trout rivers of the upper South Island of New Zealand. Taking in the rivers of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Hanmer regions. Greg over the last 8 years has built up an extensive knowledge of the better fish producing rivers in these regions, and combined with an attitude that what you want as an angler comes first will make your trip a very memorable one indeed. Greg prefers to do a multi day tour starting in Christchurch and working up through to Nelson taking in different rivers on the way. He is also quite happy to work the other way i.e. picking up in Nelson and working down to Christchurch. He believes this method gives greater flexibility as well as a good variety of different environments in which to fish. Greg and his family own a piece of farmland in Murchison (1.5 hours from Nelson) which is right on the bank of the Maruia river (the Maruia is a well known trout river in the top of the south island with plenty of 3-5lb Brown Trout). They have a modest 3 bedroom farmhouse on the property, which means you can stay close to the action.

Hi I’m Dyl from Trout Fix Nz,
I am based in Otorohanga West Coast of the North Island and guide the Waikato, King Country and Bay of Plenty areas. I’ve spent years learning the river systems and fisheries and know the waters well.
From low land streams to the amazing backcountry rivers Nz has to offer, I'm here to help you have a great day/days out. I’m happy to take out beginners right through to well seasoned anglers.
I have a passion for all styles of fly fishing but have a particular love for dry fly dropper fishing in small tributaries chasing both brown and rainbow trout.
A bit about me I am born and bred in New Zealand I’ve been fishing since I was old enough to hold a rod and that fishing addiction turned in to fly fishing over the years. My love for fly fishing has taken me all around the beautiful country of New Zealand and abroad.
Once becoming a seasoned angler in fly fishing, I found a love of teaching and seeing my friends and family catching fish on a fly rod in some of New Zealand's amazing locations that fly fishing takes us. So of course guiding professionally came along as no surprise. I have modest accommodation available in Otorohanga if required, there is some gear and rod hire available also if needed.
Let’s chat and set up a day suited to you and create some rad memories together.
For bookings and enquiries you can reach me on either Facebook or Instagram @troutfixnz or by phone +64 21247 0990 or email me by clicking the link below

Some kids carry a teddy bear, I carried a flyrod. I cut my teeth as a young fella flyfishing the vast backcountry rivers of Hawkes Bay and the Central North Island. Driven by a craving for adventure and a need to see what lies beyond the next bend, fly fishing has carried me to the far corners of this beautiful country. My introduction to the flyfishing industry was working in a flyshop outfitting the famous Tongariro river. These days I pretty happily call Poronui Lodge home and guide here for our summer season in NZ. This venue gives some of the best access to what New Zealand flyfishing has to offer, in particular extensive heli-fishing opportunities. After a decade of fishing these waters I have an intimate understanding of what it takes to be successful and can help you achieve your fly fishing dreams here!
I have a true passion for the New Zealand flyfishing experience. Sightfishing big, wild trout in ginclear rivers and untouched wilderness areas. There's nothing quite like the thrill of a good size trout engulfing a dry fly! It fulfils me immensely to be able to share these experiences with my clients. My technical knowledge, fish spotting ability and pack carrying prestige combined with my laid-back kiwi attitude will aid in making your adventure here a great one! "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." ~John Buchan. Alex can be contacted on +64 21 081 65037
Contact Alex HastieAnton Donaldson was one of the pioneers of the South Island flats fishery at Collingwood. He has spent countless hours over several years searching out hard fighting Kingfish in the shallows in Golden Bay. This fishery is one of the best flats fisheries that New Zealand has to offer owing to its 270 degree protection from onshore winds and its amazing clear water. Anton is the ultimate explorer and always has an eye out for fishing opportunities. He is also a very experienced trout guide in the Nelson region where he specialises in sight fishing for large brown trout.
Anton is a local Golden Bay resident and always has his finger on the pulse of the fishery. His knowledge of tides and where the fish will be at any given time is outstanding.Other species that can be targeted on the flats include Australian Salmon (or Kahawai in New Zealand) and Silver Trevally. There is a fantastic chance here to fish for big brown trout and then hit the flats and chase down a powerful Yellowtail kingfish. A combination trip encompassing both backcountry fly fishing and fly fishing the flats is completely unique.
Fishing has been a passion of mine for more than 50 years. During that time I have had some wonderful experiences fishing Lake Taupo and the rivers and streams that flow into it. I am here to share my experience and love of fishing with you. Catering for all levels, from beginner to experienced fisherman, I am able to tailor a fishing experience that best suits you. Introducing others to fishing and sharing some of the great local spots I have found over the years is something I really enjoy. I look forward to taking you on a memorable day of fishing in this most beautiful part of New Zealand. You will actively fish from the raft as your guide skilfully navigates downstream, hitting the most likely spots along the way. Contact Jeff Forsee @ Aotearoa AnglersI'm Barry Perkins, a 4th generation New Zealander, and have lived and fished in Southland for the last 40 years, spending the first 20 years dairy farming close to the Mataura River. During this time I have gained extensive local knowledge of the Southland area and it’s rivers, and I am confident I can show you some of the best fly fishing that you will find anywhere in the world. In 2001 we sold our farm and moved to Gore where and when I started guiding .
The Mataura River is world renowned for "Match the Hatch" fishing, however we are spoilt for choice, with over 25 other rivers and streams within one hour’s drive from Gore.I live and fish locally and consider it a privilege to guide visiting anglers on the Mataura and other Southland Rivers. After living here for many years I know the rivers intimately, and friendships with local landowners allow me access to some epic fishing spots.I specialize in Dry Fly and Nymph fishing and carry two fully rigged rods for clients, one for Dry Fly fishing, the other for Nymphing, so that we can fish off the top whenever there are rising fish without me wasting your valuable fishing time re-tying flies.
Whether you are a beginner or an expert, I have loads of patience, heaps of local knowledge, and expertise to help you experience the thrill of landing a hard fighting wild brown trout from our uncrowded Southland rivers. I do not charge a deposit or cancellation fee. Very occasionally a booking may need to be amended or cancelled due to river or weather conditions. As this is no fault of either party, I believe the client should not be financially disadvantaged. I will always try to find clear fishable water, and with over 25 rivers within one hours drive, can usually do so. Telephone: +64 3 208 6476

I love fishing. And I have fished many parts of the world over my 63 years on this blue spinning globe. I know how I like to be treated. For my own fishing, sometimes I like to start early… or fish late. Walk hard… or just cruise quietly because ‘that’s how I feel today’. I appreciate a guide who will share information, and understand what my goals are when I fish. Help me fish hard when I want… or back off and give me space if that’s what I need. That’s what I will do for you. I will look after you, in the way I like to be looked after when I engage a guide. I want you to have the trip I want to have when I travel to fish. Sometimes it comes down to one guide, one day, one river.. and the best outcome… That is what I want for you.I love 3-5 day adventures with clients that want to go 'back-country' in a hut/s.. or travel to a handful of rivers over several days in a region. I spend my guiding time between North Canterbury and the mid reaches of the South Island's West Coast where I have my own base/fishing retreat with a log burner, dartboard and a cold beverage on hand. Jeff Forsee and Jack Scott of Aotearoa Anglers in Wanaka offer a unique still-water fishing experience from their purpose-built NRS fishing rafts. Fishing the lake edges for cruising trout from the comfort of the raft is both fun and effective.
These oar powered craft offer a stealthy and peaceful approach to a day on the water. Rafts also give access to deeper channels, weed beds, muddy flats, and hidden corners that are otherwise difficult or impossible to reach on foot. They also provide a comfortable platform and a height advantage for sight fishing, similar to the experience of fishing for bonefish from a flats skiff.
We employ a variety of tactics, from nymphs and dry flies to the classic wooly bugger. You'll actively fish from the boat as your guide skillfully navigates through the most productive waters. Along with the fishing, taking in the breathtaking scenery of Central Otago from the raft is an experience in itself.
We welcome fly fishermen and spin anglers of all skill levels, from beginners to experts. Our rafts are suitable for anglers of all fitness levels, accommodating up to two anglers per raft, with a maximum group size of four across our two rafts.
Both Jack and Jeff are accredited New Zealand Raft Association guides, with current swift water rescue certifications and high-level outdoor first aid training. They are also proudly certified by AdventureMark, the highest safety accreditation for adventure activities in New Zealand.

For me, a great day of fly finishing starts the moment I meet the anglers joining me. The excitement of setting off to an unknown, secluded location; the majestic scenery of the region; the preparation and the first trout sightings set us up for a fishing day like no other.
I have been a fishing guide in Wanaka and its surroundings for over 15 years now, splitting my time between a well renowned exclusive lodge and private customers. The full day fly fishing experience with me can include 4WD transfers as well as locations accessible only by helicopter.
Having moved to New Zealand from Scotland, I consider myself incredibly lucky to be based in one of the best fishing regions in the world and I am always keen to share this piece of paradise with other keen anglers. Regardless of your level of experience, age and expectations, I can guarantee an unforgettable day of fishing.

I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.
In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. We have since filmed another episode for the second series which was big hit, representing the series at the “Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival”. The episode from the first series is available on the inflight entertainment on Air NZ! I have over 30 ten minute films on youtube, so there's plenty ways to get to know me a bit before you drop me a line! Fly fishing is my life and I'm dedicated to it. Hi, I'm Hans Kreuer, your fly fishing guide based in Nelson. I have a passion for helping anglers of all abilities achieve their angling dreams, ensuring they have a great trip by working as hard as I can. I have a relaxed style and am able to draw upon decades of fly fishing experience, both overseas (and the last 13 years) here in New Zealand. I take pride in the hand crafted flies I tie to give my clients the edge, and give help where needed with casting and general river skills, to help turn chance into reality. I like a laugh on the river and even a beer later if that takes your fancy. Overnight camping and multi-day road trips are my favourites as they allow time for a bond between guide and client to form, and also to add variety to your valuable fishing time. Single day trips are also a great option with a myriad of rivers available within a short drive of my Nelson base.
I speak fluent German to compliment my English, and I hope you take the chance to team up with me in the amazing pursuit of the large Brown and Rainbow trout that abound here in what I regard as the best sight fishery in the world.

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.
Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.
If the weather dictates better fishing conditions on the South Island’s West Coast, Chris will often be happy to travel across to fish the various lakes of this region even for just a day, to find better sight fishing opportunities for his clients. Chris’s guiding business consistently utilises careful “Catch and Release” even in the lake fisheries to help to protect existing wild fish populations, into which there can sometimes be little recruitment.
