Miles specializes in both the summer stream mouth, and autumn shoreline trophy rainbow fisheries of the Bay of Plenty

High summer sees some of the shallower lakes in the Bay of Plenty heat up, sending huge numbers of rainbows and monster browns into the cold water spring stream mouths. Shallow wading flats fishing to large schools of trout has to be seen to be believed, with Jan/Feb/Mar being prime season. Suitable for the beginner to catch their first trout, or the expert looking to hone technique or target the monster browns.

Then in Autumn the trophy rainbows return to their release points in April/May/June/July. These are without doubt the biggest rainbows taken off the North Island each year. It is shore based fly fishing, usually from your deck chair on the beach, and can be described as completely relaxing, yet explosive, with fish up to 15lb's being encountered. Again, perfect for the beginner, or trophy hunter alike! May and June offer a shot at the "Full House" - with a trophy brown off the stream and a trophy rainbow off the shoreline in one day. Perfect option for a day off your cruise ship from the Port of Tauranga!

When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle. Anton Donaldson

Anton Donaldson was one of the pioneers of the South Island flats fishery at Collingwood. He has spent countless hours over several years searching out hard fighting Kingfish in the shallows in Golden Bay. This fishery is one of the best flats fisheries that New Zealand has to offer owing to its 270 degree protection from onshore winds and its amazing clear water. Anton is the ultimate explorer and always has an eye out for fishing opportunities. He is also a very experienced trout guide in the Nelson region where he specialises in sight fishing for large brown trout.  
Anton is a local Golden Bay resident and always has his finger on the pulse of the fishery. Fly Fishing lakes have long been in my blood being very fortunate to have a father who loved fishing lakes. This meant that most weekends in summer we would spend time fishing lakes as a family. Whilst the main focus of my guiding operation is backcountry rivers, lakes can provide fantastic all year round fishing and are a great places to both guide experts and teach beginners.

We are blessed with many different types of lakes from small intimate tarns to large alpine lakes in scenic high country settings, which commonly hold Rainbow and Brown Trout of good size. I also offer two very specialized options: the first being mountain lake Brook Char, a very fun and unique species to target, secondly fishing for large Searun Brown Trout in coastal lakes, lagoons and estuaries. These are some of the largest most impressive wild trout to be found any place in New Zealand that often occur in groups foraging on the many baitfish. We have some streamer fishing that can be nothing short of spectacular but many times we sight fish using Nymphs and at times dry flies.

I take great delight in sharing very innovative and highly original fly and streamer patterns and have several unique techniques that can be used. The angler is bound to learn a lot and take forward some new adaptive approaches . Lake fishing, depending upon the time of year and mood of the day, can involve a mix of both sight and blind fishing using Dry Flies { we get some lush Beetle and Cicada hatches} Nymphs and streamers. Casey Cravens

Casey guides the Mataura, Otago and Southland streams and wilderness rivers of the South Island. His fishing obsession dates back to a childhood in a hot dry land far, far away. For over 25 years he's fly fished for a wide range of species and landscapes: from Texas black bass and redfish to Rocky Mountain cutthroats, to Quebec's sea-run brook trout and Atlantic salmon, to Patagonia's browns and rainbows. Lake Brunner is the biggest lake on the West Coast.When fishing Brunner with Brent Beadle the angler has plenty of options to try and out smart the cunning wild browns that cruise the sandy beaches exposing their tails and fins,foraging amongst the weed beds or shoaled up at the river mouths that flow into the lake.Allot of fish are caught sight casting from Brent's boat Sneakuponim as he which he quietly rows around the edges hunting out the browns for the fisherman to set a trap and hook up on these strong lake fish.We use floating lines and catch fish on dries nymphs and streamers.Good numbers of smelt help to fatten up these Brunner beauties.The lake offers some wonderful dry fly fishing from Oct through to April and is open for fishing all year.We hold the record for fly fishing 31 landed to the boat and forty four soft baiting.Spin fishing soft baiting and trolling is on offer.Winter fishing can be productive using any methord.The lake has three rivers that flow into it and these can be fished from the bank.This is the ideal place to fish if you are finding the rivers a bit hard going, if you fish from my boat, you don't even get your feet wet.

If necessary, he is always prepared to travel between regions to access fishing locations experiencing better sight fishing conditions in the often highly variable weather conditions that the South Island can seasonally experience, and provides a variety of inter-regional tour options including a pick-up from distant locations. He caters for anglers of all skill levels with quality fishing tackle and custom “Chris tied/designed” flies being utilised to provide every advantage to his guests.

Chris wants a day out on the water with him to not only to be a successful days fishing but also to be an interesting and educational kiwi outdoor experience, as he likes to incorporate information about NZ wildlife, natural history and ecology into a day on the water chasing trout. Nigel Birt

Having worked professionally as a fly-fishing guide and instructor since 1988, his knowledge of the sport is outstanding. Now a founding co-owner of Backcountry New Zealand, Nigel was trained at an early age by professional guides and served his apprenticeship at a top New Zealand fishing lodge. Through his experiences Nigel has developed skills and knowledge that competes with New Zealand's best, has been adventuring in the outdoors since the age of eight years old and tying fishing flies since he was twelve. Backcountry New Zealand provides visitors to New Zealand with quality angling and hunting experiences to suit their requirements. Backcountry NZ consists of guides with an intimate knowledge of both the East and West coast fisheries of the South Island. Fishing style is largely sight fishing for brown and rainbow trout with increased opportunities for anglers with above average fitness abilities. Fishing is available during the months of October until April, and Backcountry New Zealand can provide quality equipment and accommodation packages to suit your requirements.

Barry Perkins

I'm Barry Perkins, a 4th generation New Zealander, and have lived and fished in Southland for the last 40 years, spending the first 20 years dairy farming close to the Mataura River. During this time I have gained extensive local knowledge of the Southland area and it’s rivers, and I am confident I can show you some of the best fly fishing that you will find anywhere in the world. In 2001 we sold our farm and moved to Gore where and when I started guiding .

The Mataura River is world renowned for  "Match the Hatch" fishing, however we are spoilt for choice, with over 25 other rivers and streams within one hour’s drive from Gore.I live and fish locally and consider it a privilege to guide visiting anglers on the Mataura and other Southland Rivers. After living here for many years I know the rivers intimately, and friendships with local landowners allow me access to some epic fishing spots.I specialize in Dry Fly and Nymph fishing and carry two fully rigged rods for clients, one for Dry Fly fishing, the other for Nymphing, so that we can fish off the top whenever there are rising fish without me wasting your valuable fishing time re-tying flies.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, I have loads of patience, heaps of local knowledge, and expertise to help you experience the thrill of landing a hard fighting wild brown trout from our uncrowded Southland rivers. I do not charge a deposit or cancellation fee. Very occasionally a booking may need to be amended or cancelled due to river or weather conditions. As this is no fault of either party, I believe the client should not be financially disadvantaged.
