Jeff Forsee and Jack Scott of Aotearoa Anglers in Wanaka offer a unique still-water fishing experience from their purpose-built NRS fishing rafts. Fishing the lake edges for cruising trout from the comfort of the raft is both fun and effective.

These oar powered craft offer a stealthy and peaceful approach to a day on the water. Rafts also give access to deeper channels, weed beds, muddy flats, and hidden corners that are otherwise difficult or impossible to reach on foot. They also provide a comfortable platform and a height advantage for sight fishing, similar to the experience of fishing for bonefish from a flats skiff.

Mike Kirkpatrick

Mike Kirkpatrick owns and operates Latitude Guiding based in Nelson and has a passion for stalking large Brown Trout in the wonderful ‘top of the south’ region renowned for its sunny Mediterranean climate and endless Rivers, Lakes and Streams. Chris Dore

Chris Dore is a Queenstown based fly fishing guide and well known New Zealand fly fishing personality. He is an endorsed member of the SCOTT Fly Rod Pro Staff Team and in 2006 became one of the first New Zealanders to successfully pass the internationally recognised, Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructors examination.

Our powered Stealth Craft 16-54 Pro-Power Drifter Sled is unique to New Zealand. Built in the USA by Stealth Craft Boats in Baldwin, Michigan. Powered by a 70-40 Mercury outboard jet-unit so you can fish in safety and comfort.

At sixteen feet long and seven feet wide and with two stand-up casting braces, it’s a roomy and comfortable casting platform. The centre rowing seat allows our guides to control the boat as we drift downstream. Three padded seats make for a comfortable & dry day when traveling to and from the fishing, there is a dry locker to keep our clients' gear safe and dry.

The jet unit enables travel both up and down-stream, fishing some glides a second time to catch that elusive trout. The Shallow draught of our Pro Drifter Sled enables us to motor or row across water only a few inches deep

Barry Perkins

I'm Barry Perkins, a 4th generation New Zealander, and have lived and fished in Southland for the last 40 years, spending the first 20 years dairy farming close to the Mataura River. During this time I have gained extensive local knowledge of the Southland area and it’s rivers, and I am confident I can show you some of the best fly fishing that you will find anywhere in the world. In 2001 we sold our farm and moved to Gore where and when I started guiding .

The Mataura River is world renowned for  "Match the Hatch" fishing, however we are spoilt for choice, with over 25 other rivers and streams within one hour’s drive from Gore.I live and fish locally and consider it a privilege to guide visiting anglers on the Mataura and other Southland Rivers. Quentin Donnelly

Growing up in Southland, Quentins formative years were spent along the banks of the Aparima River, or one of the many other world class waters in the province.

Quentin (or “Q” as he is more commonly known) was lucky enough to have a father who put a fly rod in his hands at a very young age, and in doing so has sparked an unrelenting drive to learn about every aspect of the sport.

Ian Cole

Ian Cole is based in picturesque Wanaka which nestles in the very heart of NZ’s Southern Alps. Brent Beadle

Brent Beadle is based at Moana on the shores of beautiful Lake Brunner where the trout die of old age and has been guiding around the Lake Brunner area for 15 years. All his boats have a current survey and Brent has Department of Conservation permits to fish the area. Brent often drifts the lake edge sight casting to prime fish as well as helifishing trips, a great way to fish the head waters of the regions rivers and overnight stays in wilderness river valleys with excellent accommodation available if required. The fishing in the Mt. Chris Bell

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.

Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.

If the weather dictates better fishing conditions on the South Island’s West Coast, Chris will often be happy to travel across to fish the various lakes of this region even for just a day, to find better sight fishing opportunities for his clients. Chris’s guiding business consistently utilises careful “Catch and Release” even in the lake fisheries to help to protect existing wild fish populations, into which there can sometimes be little recruitment. Craig Aspinall

On leaving school I trained as a carpenter in Wellington, when work moved me to Taupo for a few building projects. Then in the late 80s, I teamed up with my brother Mark Aspinall to guide in the Taupo region. After building up my guiding experience my brother introduced me to Poronui lodge in the early 90s where now I do the bulk of my guiding during the summer fishing season. I am currently the longest serving guide at Poronui and enjoy seeing my repeat clients each season. I have always been loyal to my brother's guiding business where I occasionally team up with him to do some local guiding and back country fishing trips with his clients. Miles Rushmer

Miles specializes in both the summer stream mouth, and autumn shoreline trophy rainbow fisheries of the Bay of Plenty

High summer sees some of the shallower lakes in the Bay of Plenty heat up, sending huge numbers of rainbows and monster browns into the cold water spring stream mouths. Shallow wading flats fishing to large schools of trout has to be seen to be believed, with Jan/Feb/Mar being prime season. Suitable for the beginner to catch their first trout, or the expert looking to hone technique or target the monster browns.

Then in Autumn the trophy rainbows return to their release points in April/May/June/July. These are without doubt the biggest rainbows taken off the North Island each year. It is shore based fly fishing, usually from your deck chair on the beach, and can be described as completely relaxing, yet explosive, with fish up to 15lb's being encountered. Again, perfect for the beginner, or trophy hunter alike! May and June offer a shot at the "Full House" - with a trophy brown off the stream and a trophy rainbow off the shoreline in one day. I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. Greg Gardiner

Let Greg be your guide along the world famous Brown Trout rivers of the upper South Island of New Zealand. Taking in the rivers of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Hanmer regions. Steve Yerex

Steve Yerex has been fly fishing in the Central North Island for fifteen years. Based in Taupo, he specialises in Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout fly fishing, both summer dry fly action and winter steelhead runs. He is able to provide back country heli fishing, and as a senior trip leader single or multi-day raft fishing trips, as well as wade fishing. He can provide riverside accommodation on the Tauranga-Taupo River, and can supply all equipment as needed. Beginners and knowledgeable fisherman alike will enjoy the experience.

Hi I’m Dyl from Trout Fix Nz,

I am based in Otorohanga West Coast of the North Island and guide the Waikato, King Country and Bay of Plenty areas. I’ve spent years learning the river systems and fisheries and know the waters well.

From low land streams to the amazing backcountry rivers Nz has to offer, I'm here to help you have a great day/days out. I’m happy to take out beginners right through to well seasoned anglers.

I have a passion for all styles of fly fishing but have a particular love for dry fly dropper fishing in small tributaries chasing both brown and rainbow trout. 

A bit about me I am born and bred in New Zealand I’ve been fishing since I was old enough to hold a rod and that fishing addiction turned in to fly fishing over the years. My love for fly fishing has taken me all around the beautiful country of New Zealand and abroad.

Once becoming a seasoned angler in fly fishing, I found a love of teaching and seeing my friends and family catching fish on a fly rod in some of New Zealand's amazing locations that fly fishing takes us. So of course guiding professionally came along as no surprise. I have modest accommodation available in Otorohanga if required, there is some gear and rod hire available also if needed.

Ben Haywood

With the rugged Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand as a magnificent backdrop, enjoy catching wild Chinook (King) salmon averaging between 5kg (12lb) and 11kg (25lb) in the very scenic and unique braided rivers of Canterbury.

Canterbury is the main salmon fishing destination in New Zealand and a haven for salmon fishing trips, with the top 4 plentiful rivers less than 90 minutes from Christchurch International Airport. The salmon arrive from the Pacific Ocean and begin their spawning run, usually starting in November and continuing to run through until approximately the end of April.  

Your fishing guide, Ben Haywood, is based in Christchurch and specialises in catching Chinook salmon on both light spin tackle and the fly.
