Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Mike is also an active member of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Board. He guides primarily out of River Birches Lodge which is also situated on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mark Aspinall

I started flyfishing in the rivers around the Dunedin district where I was brought up, eventually moving to Taupo to join what was then called the NZ Forest Service as a Ranger Trainee. On leaving the Forest Service I started my own guiding business in the early 80s andin 1987 I joined Simon Dickie and Paddy Clark in the second year of operations at Poronui fishing lodge. There I gained most of my knowledge of the Central North Island back country rivers. Around 1999 I became head guide until Feb 2011 when I left Poronui to concentrate to my own guiding business based out of Taupo. Currently, I have 3 guides on the MA team they are Dave Wood, Duncan Mc Donald and Craig Aspinall. I guide all year round but specialize in back country rivers in the summer time. I guide all levels of clients, from first time people that have never held a fly rod to seasoned experts. Chris owns and operates  Christchurch based “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” where he specialises in sight fishing for large Brown and Rainbow trout in the beautiful Canterbury and Westland regions of the South Island of New Zealand (NZ). He loves to add an element of adventure to his fishing guiding by accessing more remote waters, often by utilising his 4WD vehicle. He guides a wide range of waters from small streams and spring creeks to the larger freestone rivers, and offers exciting still-water sight fishing opportunities for large cruising Brown trout along shallow lake margins. Additionally for those guests wanting to utilise a helicopter to quickly access remote headwater fisheries, he caters for single or multi-day backcountry heli-fishing trips, both in Canterbury and on the West Coast. 

Chris offers a combination of different package options, and will always try to utilise a variety of waters chosen to suit the sometimes varied physical abilities of his clients, in his quest to provide them with the fly-fishing trip of a lifetime. If necessary, he is always prepared to travel between regions to access fishing locations experiencing better sight fishing conditions in the often highly variable weather conditions that the South Island can seasonally experience, and provides a variety of inter-regional tour options including a pick-up from distant locations. He caters for anglers of all skill levels with quality fishing tackle and custom “Chris tied/designed” flies being utilised to provide every advantage to his guests.

Chris wants a day out on the water with him to not only to be a successful days fishing but also to be an interesting and educational kiwi outdoor experience, as he likes to incorporate information about NZ wildlife, natural history and ecology into a day on the water chasing trout. Hans Kreuer

Hi, I'm Hans Kreuer, your fly fishing guide based in Nelson. I have a passion for helping anglers of all abilities achieve their angling dreams, ensuring they have a great trip by working as hard as I can. I have a relaxed style and am able to draw upon decades of fly fishing experience, both overseas (and the last 13 years) here in New Zealand. I take pride in the hand crafted flies I tie to give my clients the edge, and give help where needed with casting and general river skills, to help turn chance into reality. I like a laugh on the river and even a beer later if that takes your fancy. Overnight camping and multi-day road trips are my favourites as they allow time for a bond between guide and client to form, and also to add variety to your valuable fishing time. Single day trips are also a great option with a myriad of rivers available within a short drive of my Nelson base.
