Hi, I'm Hans Kreuer, your fly fishing guide based in Nelson. I have a passion for helping anglers of all abilities achieve their angling dreams, ensuring they have a great trip by working as hard as I can. I have a relaxed style and am able to draw upon decades of fly fishing experience, both overseas (and the last 13 years) here in New Zealand. I started flyfishing in the rivers around the Dunedin district where I was brought up, eventually moving to Taupo to join what was then called the NZ Forest Service as a Ranger Trainee. On leaving the Forest Service I started my own guiding business in the early 80s andin 1987 I joined Simon Dickie and Paddy Clark in the second year of operations at Poronui fishing lodge. There I gained most of my knowledge of the Central North Island back country rivers. Around 1999 I became head guide until Feb 2011 when I left Poronui to concentrate to my own guiding business based out of Taupo. Currently, I have 3 guides on the MA team they are Dave Wood, Duncan Mc Donald and Craig Aspinall. I guide all year round but specialize in back country rivers in the summer time. I guide all levels of clients, from first time people that have never held a fly rod to seasoned experts. As well as guiding my own clients I also guide for: Chris Jolly Outdoors, Huka and Tongariro lodges and then personally guide for some the best agents and outfitters from NZ and overseas.

Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Mike is also an active member of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Board. He guides primarily out of River Birches Lodge which is also situated on the banks of the Tongariro River.

All lunches are supplied along with high quality fishing rods and gear including waders. Mike caters for all levels of experience. He also provides a beginner’s package which includes an introduction to the basics of casting a fly-line and either a full or half day on the river. Rates are available on request.

Greg Gardiner

Let Greg be your guide along the world famous Brown Trout rivers of the upper South Island of New Zealand. Taking in the rivers of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Hanmer regions. Greg over the last 8 years has built up an extensive knowledge of the better fish producing rivers in these regions, and combined with an attitude that what you want as an angler comes first will make your trip a very memorable one indeed. Greg prefers to do a multi day tour starting in Christchurch and working up through to Nelson taking in different rivers on the way. He is also quite happy to work the other way i.e. picking up in Nelson and working down to Christchurch. He believes this method gives greater flexibility as well as a good variety of different environments in which to fish. Greg and his family own a piece of farmland in Murchison (1.5 hours from Nelson) which is right on the bank of the Maruia river (the Maruia is a well known trout river in the top of the south island with plenty of 3-5lb Brown Trout). They have a modest 3 bedroom farmhouse on the property, which means you can stay close to the action.

I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. We have since filmed another episode for the second series which was big hit, representing the series at the “Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival”. The fishing in the Mt. Growing up in Southland, Quentins formative years were spent along the banks of the Aparima River, or one of the many other world class waters in the province.

Quentin (or “Q” as he is more commonly known) was lucky enough to have a father who put a fly rod in his hands at a very young age, and in doing so has sparked an unrelenting drive to learn about every aspect of the sport.

I first fly-fished the Tongariro River when our family moved to Turangi in the early 1980s. At this time I was still in high school, occasionally cutting class to go fishing! After finishing school, I started guiding with my father in 1984 as well as working at the Turangi Fly Shop Sporting Life. During the early 90s, I started guiding for Tongariro Lodge where I have been Head Guide since 2001.
With the advent of covid I went full circle when the borders closed by returning to Sporting Life and guiding mostly New Zealanders who were rediscovering their love of trout fishing. Now the borders are open I am again back to guiding full time. Having over 35 years guiding experience I provide for all levels of fly-fishing ability – from novice anglers to seasoned veterans. The jet unit enables travel both up and down-stream, fishing some glides a second time to catch that elusive trout. The Shallow draught of our Pro Drifter Sled enables us to motor or row across water only a few inches deep

There are seven rod holders and we have the rods set-up for all conditions: nymphing, dry fly, and streamer fishing. We carry a combination of Ovis, Sage, Loomis & Primal rods and Hatch, Lampson, Orvis, and Abel reels.

Clients are welcome to bring their own gear, 5/6wgt rods are the go.

The boat and skippers are Maritime New Zealand certified. Our guides are members of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guide Association (NZPFGA)

Drift Boat Fly Fishing New Zealand has consents to fish The Upper Clutha  River in Otago, The Waitaki River and its catchment in South Canterbury, and the Waiau River in Southland.

Brent Beadle

Brent Beadle is based at Moana on the shores of beautiful Lake Brunner where the trout die of old age and has been guiding around the Lake Brunner area for 15 years. All his boats have a current survey and Brent has Department of Conservation permits to fish the area. Brent often drifts the lake edge sight casting to prime fish as well as helifishing trips, a great way to fish the head waters of the regions rivers and overnight stays in wilderness river valleys with excellent accommodation available if required.
