Serge A Bonnafoux

When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle. I started flyfishing in the rivers around the Dunedin district where I was brought up, eventually moving to Taupo to join what was then called the NZ Forest Service as a Ranger Trainee. On leaving the Forest Service I started my own guiding business in the early 80s andin 1987 I joined Simon Dickie and Paddy Clark in the second year of operations at Poronui fishing lodge. There I gained most of my knowledge of the Central North Island back country rivers. Around 1999 I became head guide until Feb 2011 when I left Poronui to concentrate to my own guiding business based out of Taupo. Currently, I have 3 guides on the MA team they are Dave Wood, Duncan Mc Donald and Craig Aspinall. I guide all year round but specialize in back country rivers in the summer time. I guide all levels of clients, from first time people that have never held a fly rod to seasoned experts. As well as guiding my own clients I also guide for: Chris Jolly Outdoors, Huka and Tongariro lodges and then personally guide for some the best agents and outfitters from NZ and overseas.

Craig Aspinall

On leaving school I trained as a carpenter in Wellington, when work moved me to Taupo for a few building projects. Then in the late 80s, I teamed up with my brother Mark Aspinall to guide in the Taupo region. After building up my guiding experience my brother introduced me to Poronui lodge in the early 90s where now I do the bulk of my guiding during the summer fishing season. I am currently the longest serving guide at Poronui and enjoy seeing my repeat clients each season. Growing up in Southland, Quentins formative years were spent along the banks of the Aparima River, or one of the many other world class waters in the province.

I first fly-fished the Tongariro River when our family moved to Turangi in the early 1980s. At this time I was still in high school, occasionally cutting class to go fishing! After finishing school, I started guiding with my father in 1984 as well as working at the Turangi Fly Shop Sporting Life. During the early 90s, I started guiding for Tongariro Lodge where I have been Head Guide since 2001.
With the advent of covid I went full circle when the borders closed by returning to Sporting Life and guiding mostly New Zealanders who were rediscovering their love of trout fishing. Anton Donaldson was one of the pioneers of the South Island flats fishery at Collingwood. He has spent countless hours over several years searching out hard fighting Kingfish in the shallows in Golden Bay. This fishery is one of the best flats fisheries that New Zealand has to offer owing to its 270 degree protection from onshore winds and its amazing clear water. Anton is the ultimate explorer and always has an eye out for fishing opportunities. He is also a very experienced trout guide in the Nelson region where he specialises in sight fishing for large brown trout.  
Anton is a local Golden Bay resident and always has his finger on the pulse of the fishery. Kahawai cruise the shallows busting up endless shoals of bait fish, these fish really snatch at the fly, jump repeatedly and fight as hard as any... pound for pound.

Miles Rushmer

Miles specializes in both the summer stream mouth, and autumn shoreline trophy rainbow fisheries of the Bay of Plenty

High summer sees some of the shallower lakes in the Bay of Plenty heat up, sending huge numbers of rainbows and monster browns into the cold water spring stream mouths. Shallow wading flats fishing to large schools of trout has to be seen to be believed, with Jan/Feb/Mar being prime season. Suitable for the beginner to catch their first trout, or the expert looking to hone technique or target the monster browns.

Then in Autumn the trophy rainbows return to their release points in April/May/June/July. These are without doubt the biggest rainbows taken off the North Island each year. It is shore based fly fishing, usually from your deck chair on the beach, and can be described as completely relaxing, yet explosive, with fish up to 15lb's being encountered. Again, perfect for the beginner, or trophy hunter alike! May and June offer a shot at the "Full House" - with a trophy brown off the stream and a trophy rainbow off the shoreline in one day. Neil Goldie is a trout and salmon fishing guide based in Christchurch which is located in the central South Island of New Zealand.
