Cory Scott

Having begun fly fishing at 4 years old on the rivers of Southland under the guidance of his grandfather, Gisborne’s Cory Scott has gone on to win 11X New Zealand Fly Fishing Championships titles, been a part of 6X New Zealand World Championships Teams and has been a Fly Fishing guide for 20 years.

Yet his real passion is the backcountry fisheries of the East Cape and across New Zealand, which he integrates all this competition and international fishing experience and a multitude of different techniques to fool the wily trout of the NZ mountains. As your guide, Cory is available to share his learnings and techniques obtained from many years under the tutelage of the Master, the trout itself, as well as the multitude of learnings picked up across the country and the world, during the heat of the world’s toughest competitions where fooling that next fish is the difference between winning and losing, which he has fine-tuned to NZ conditions.

While Cory boasts a vast knowledge of rivers, streams and lakes throughout NZ, it is on the East Cape of the North Island which Cory is based and calls home. This region is one of the most isolated and rugged parts of the country, and the many fisheries that make up the Te Urewera and Raukumara Ranges are where Cory has an intimate connection, knowing each like the back of his hand.

The isolated nature of the region results in un-pressured fisheries, where you will be hard pressed to see another angler on your journeys. This has created some of the most stunning fisheries you will find on this planet. And Cory’s regular clients attest this.

Cory is a witty character, who loves to share a laugh with his clients, while at the same time standing true to his dedicated and professional approach to your special day or days. And by way of his passion, etiquette and commitment to being the best for himself and for his clients, he has forged a reputation as one of the most sought after guides in the country.

Greg Gardiner

Let Greg be your guide along the world famous Brown Trout rivers of the upper South Island of New Zealand. Taking in the rivers of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Hanmer regions. Greg over the last 8 years has built up an extensive knowledge of the better fish producing rivers in these regions, and combined with an attitude that what you want as an angler comes first will make your trip a very memorable one indeed. Greg prefers to do a multi day tour starting in Christchurch and working up through to Nelson taking in different rivers on the way. He is also quite happy to work the other way i.e. picking up in Nelson and working down to Christchurch. He believes this method gives greater flexibility as well as a good variety of different environments in which to fish. Greg and his family own a piece of farmland in Murchison (1.5 hours from Nelson) which is right on the bank of the Maruia river (the Maruia is a well known trout river in the top of the south island with plenty of 3-5lb Brown Trout). They have a modest 3 bedroom farmhouse on the property, which means you can stay close to the action.

Will Spry

The fishing in the Mt. Cook/Mackenzie High Country has been a big part of my life since 1993.  Having cut my guiding teeth growing up fishing, instructing and guiding in the Snowy Mountains in Australia with my father, Mike Spry as my mentor and best mate, to have the opportunity to live and guide in New Zealand was a dream that most anglers would jump at and I was no exception!  I love sharing the waters of the region; spotting fish, nutting out strategies and finally fooling the fish is probably the ultimate way to fish – hunting with a rod.  Whilst conditions don’t always make this style of fishing possible, we have a huge variety of lakes and tarns, rivers of all sizes and streams – from springs to burbling brooks, all available within a short distance of our base which opens up endless opportunities for great fishing.  The scenery we fish in is mind blowing at times and the fish are too!  Nymphing, dry fly and streamer swinging can all feature, each with their own unique styles being employed.  Spry Fly NZ offers day trips and packaged extended stays in the region, of up to a week.

Go Fish Kiwi offers an unforgettable raft fishing experience on some of the best rivers in New Zealand’s North Island.

Raft fishing gives you the unique advantage of accessing remote, pristine locations that are difficult to reach by foot, allowing us to cover more water in a single day. These off-the-beaten-path rivers are rarely fished, meaning the fish are less pressured and more eager to bite.

Using an oar-powered raft, we navigate the river while you relax and take in the breathtaking scenery, all while waiting for the next great riffle, pool, or drop-off to hop out of the raft and fish. Our expert knowledge spans iconic rivers like the Mohaka, Rangitikei, TukiTuki, Ruamahunga, Whakapapa, and many more.

Your guide, Glenn “Beachy,” is a qualified Grade 3 raft guide with swiftwater rescue training and certification. Go Fish Kiwi also undergoes independent safety audits by Adventure Mark and holds Outdoor First Aid certification, ensuring a safe and enjoyable adventure for all.

Miles Rushmer

Miles specializes in both the summer stream mouth, and autumn shoreline trophy rainbow fisheries of the Bay of Plenty

High summer sees some of the shallower lakes in the Bay of Plenty heat up, sending huge numbers of rainbows and monster browns into the cold water spring stream mouths. Shallow wading flats fishing to large schools of trout has to be seen to be believed, with Jan/Feb/Mar being prime season. Suitable for the beginner to catch their first trout, or the expert looking to hone technique or target the monster browns.

Then in Autumn the trophy rainbows return to their release points in April/May/June/July. These are without doubt the biggest rainbows taken off the North Island each year. It is shore based fly fishing, usually from your deck chair on the beach, and can be described as completely relaxing, yet explosive, with fish up to 15lb's being encountered. Again, perfect for the beginner, or trophy hunter alike! May and June offer a shot at the "Full House" - with a trophy brown off the stream and a trophy rainbow off the shoreline in one day. Perfect option for a day off your cruise ship from the Port of Tauranga!

Ronan Creane

I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. We have since filmed another episode for the second series which was big hit, representing the series at the “Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival”. The episode from the first series is available on the inflight entertainment on Air NZ! I have over 30 ten minute films on youtube, so there's plenty ways to get to know me a bit before you drop me a line! Fly fishing is my life and I'm dedicated to it. You can contact me on +64 22 0461768 or via my web site.

Peter Wilton

At the age of nine I made my first ever cast into the turbulent waters of the Tongariro River, the raw power of her thundering green rapids was intimidating. The whole scene completely absorbed me. Second cast a five pound rainbow struck on the swing ripping line from my frozen fingers. Little did I know the impact that particular moment would have on my life. I was completely captivated; immersed in the river's magic. Fifty years on, that fascination still lingers and I remain addicted, absorbed in the rivers grandour. Fly fishing in New Zealand rivers isn't just a sport, it's a passion that consumes you and over the last twenty years I've been fortunate to be involved not only as a guide, but also as a fishery ranger and trap operater working for the Department of Conservation who manage this great fishery. Summer sees my passion extend beyond the Taupo rivers to our majestic wilderness rivers that border our region. Stalking wild browns and rainbows with nymph or dryfly in a sunlit gorge is a unique New Zealand experience. I invite you to share this passion and join me on an adventure of your choice, whether you're an experienced or novice angler, there's a river just waiting for you.

Tim McCarthy

I first fly-fished the Tongariro River when our family moved to Turangi in the early 1980s. At this time I was still in high school, occasionally cutting class to go fishing! After finishing school, I started guiding with my father in 1984 as well as working at the Turangi Fly Shop Sporting Life. During the early 90s, I started guiding for Tongariro Lodge where I have been Head Guide since 2001.
With the advent of covid I went full circle when the borders closed by returning to Sporting Life and guiding mostly New Zealanders who were rediscovering their love of trout fishing. Now the borders are open I am again back to guiding full time. Having over 35 years guiding experience I provide for all levels of fly-fishing ability – from novice anglers to seasoned veterans. Being based in Turangi not only gives us access to the local Taupo rivers but also back country areas. I can also provide a helicopter or rafting option to get you to the more remote trout fishing areas.

I also run a fully licenced boat on Lake Taupo specialising in fly-fishing the famous Tongariro River Delta. This is great option for when the feet are a little tired. I look forward to fulfilling your dream New Zealand fly fishing experience.

Barry Perkins

I'm Barry Perkins, a 4th generation New Zealander, and have lived and fished in Southland for the last 40 years, spending the first 20 years dairy farming close to the Mataura River. During this time I have gained extensive local knowledge of the Southland area and it’s rivers, and I am confident I can show you some of the best fly fishing that you will find anywhere in the world. In 2001 we sold our farm and moved to Gore where and when I started guiding .

The Mataura River is world renowned for  "Match the Hatch" fishing, however we are spoilt for choice, with over 25 other rivers and streams within one hour’s drive from Gore.I live and fish locally and consider it a privilege to guide visiting anglers on the Mataura and other Southland Rivers. After living here for many years I know the rivers intimately, and friendships with local landowners allow me access to some epic fishing spots.I specialize in Dry Fly and Nymph fishing and carry two fully rigged rods for clients, one for Dry Fly fishing, the other for Nymphing, so that we can fish off the top whenever there are rising fish without me wasting your valuable fishing time re-tying flies.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, I have loads of patience, heaps of local knowledge, and expertise to help you experience the thrill of landing a hard fighting wild brown trout from our uncrowded Southland rivers. I do not charge a deposit or cancellation fee. Very occasionally a booking may need to be amended or cancelled due to river or weather conditions. As this is no fault of either party, I believe the client should not be financially disadvantaged. I will always try to find clear fishable water, and with over 25 rivers within one hours drive, can usually do so. Telephone: +64 3 208 6476

Alex Hastie

Some kids carry a teddy bear, I carried a flyrod. I cut my teeth as a young fella flyfishing the vast backcountry rivers of Hawkes Bay and the Central North Island. Driven by a craving for adventure and a need to see what lies beyond the next bend, fly fishing has carried me to the far corners of this beautiful country. My introduction to the flyfishing industry was working in a flyshop outfitting the famous Tongariro river. These days I pretty happily call Poronui Lodge home and guide here for our summer season in NZ. This venue gives some of the best access to what New Zealand flyfishing has to offer, in particular extensive heli-fishing opportunities. After a decade of fishing these waters I have an intimate understanding of what it takes to be successful and can help you achieve your fly fishing dreams here!

I have a true passion for the New Zealand flyfishing experience. Sightfishing big, wild trout in ginclear rivers and untouched wilderness areas. There's nothing quite like the thrill of a good size trout engulfing a dry fly! It fulfils me immensely to be able to share these experiences with my clients. My technical knowledge, fish spotting ability and pack carrying prestige combined with my laid-back kiwi attitude will aid in making your adventure here a great one! "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." ~John Buchan. Alex can be contacted on +64 21 081 65037

Serge A Bonnafoux

When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle. In South Canterbury lakes also have big rainbows. Despite of the abundance of fish in the lakes we encourage catch and release. You can contact me on +64 3 315 7499 or +64 21 211 3462

Chris Bell

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.

Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.

If the weather dictates better fishing conditions on the South Island’s West Coast, Chris will often be happy to travel across to fish the various lakes of this region even for just a day, to find better sight fishing opportunities for his clients. Chris’s guiding business consistently utilises careful “Catch and Release” even in the lake fisheries to help to protect existing wild fish populations, into which there can sometimes be little recruitment.
