Adam Priest

Adam grew up fly fishing the rivers, streams and lakes of Taranaki and New Zealand, where he developed a passion for this recreation and a keen interest in ecology. Over the years Adam has been employed in many guiding roles within the tourism industry.

Kahawai cruise the shallows busting up endless shoals of bait fish, these fish really snatch at the fly, jump repeatedly and fight as hard as any... pound for pound.

Martin Langlands

Fly Fishing lakes have long been in my blood being very fortunate to have a father who loved fishing lakes. This meant that most weekends in summer we would spend time fishing lakes as a family. Whilst the main focus of my guiding operation is backcountry rivers, lakes can provide fantastic all year round fishing and are a great places to both guide experts and teach beginners.

We are blessed with many different types of lakes from small intimate tarns to large alpine lakes in scenic high country settings, which commonly hold Rainbow and Brown Trout of good size. I also offer two very specialized options: the first being mountain lake Brook Char, a very fun and unique species to target, secondly fishing for large Searun Brown Trout in coastal lakes, lagoons and estuaries. These are some of the largest most impressive wild trout to be found any place in New Zealand that often occur in groups foraging on the many baitfish. We have some streamer fishing that can be nothing short of spectacular but many times we sight fish using Nymphs and at times dry flies.

I take great delight in sharing very innovative and highly original fly and streamer patterns and have several unique techniques that can be used. The angler is bound to learn a lot and take forward some new adaptive approaches . Lake fishing, depending upon the time of year and mood of the day, can involve a mix of both sight and blind fishing using Dry Flies { we get some lush Beetle and Cicada hatches} Nymphs and streamers. I am happy to supply all gear and cater for all levels and have all year round options .

Jeff Forsee @ Aotearoa Anglers

NZPFGA members Jack Scott and Jeff Forsee operate Aotearoa Anglers, based in Wanaka, and offer a wide range of NZ fishing options including drift fishing from two purpose-built NRS Slipstream rafts. While drift boats or rafts might be commonplace in North America there are relatively few here in NZ and Jack and Jeff are proud to be some of the select operators offering this unique New Zealand fishing experience.

You will actively fish from the raft as your guide skilfully navigates downstream, hitting the most likely spots along the way. Anglers will use a variety of techniques, from dry flies and nymphs to streamers, based on the season and water conditions. Streamer fishing is a common and effective technique and there is nothing more exciting than seeing a brown or rainbow trout chase down your fly in the gin-clear water!

When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle. I first fly-fished the Tongariro River when our family moved to Turangi in the early 1980s. At this time I was still in high school, occasionally cutting class to go fishing! After finishing school, I started guiding with my father in 1984 as well as working at the Turangi Fly Shop Sporting Life. During the early 90s, I started guiding for Tongariro Lodge where I have been Head Guide since 2001.
With the advent of covid I went full circle when the borders closed by returning to Sporting Life and guiding mostly New Zealanders who were rediscovering their love of trout fishing. Now the borders are open I am again back to guiding full time. Having over 35 years guiding experience I provide for all levels of fly-fishing ability – from novice anglers to seasoned veterans. Being based in Turangi not only gives us access to the local Taupo rivers but also back country areas. Anton Donaldson was one of the pioneers of the South Island flats fishery at Collingwood. I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. Chris Bell

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.

Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.

Quentin Donnelly

Growing up in Southland, Quentins formative years were spent along the banks of the Aparima River, or one of the many other world class waters in the province.

Quentin (or “Q” as he is more commonly known) was lucky enough to have a father who put a fly rod in his hands at a very young age, and in doing so has sparked an unrelenting drive to learn about every aspect of the sport.

I'm Barry Perkins, a 4th generation New Zealander, and have lived and fished in Southland for the last 40 years, spending the first 20 years dairy farming close to the Mataura River. On leaving school I trained as a carpenter in Wellington, when work moved me to Taupo for a few building projects. Then in the late 80s, I teamed up with my brother Mark Aspinall to guide in the Taupo region. After building up my guiding experience my brother introduced me to Poronui lodge in the early 90s where now I do the bulk of my guiding during the summer fishing season. I am currently the longest serving guide at Poronui and enjoy seeing my repeat clients each season. I have always been loyal to my brother's guiding business where I occasionally team up with him to do some local guiding and back country fishing trips with his clients. We look forward to continuing to do for many years. When I am not working I enjoy: fly tying ,sea fishing,trout fishing, diving and keeping fit.

Greg Gardiner

Let Greg be your guide along the world famous Brown Trout rivers of the upper South Island of New Zealand. Taking in the rivers of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Hanmer regions. Greg over the last 8 years has built up an extensive knowledge of the better fish producing rivers in these regions, and combined with an attitude that what you want as an angler comes first will make your trip a very memorable one indeed. Greg prefers to do a multi day tour starting in Christchurch and working up through to Nelson taking in different rivers on the way. He is also quite happy to work the other way i.e. picking up in Nelson and working down to Christchurch. He believes this method gives greater flexibility as well as a good variety of different environments in which to fish. Greg and his family own a piece of farmland in Murchison (1.5 hours from Nelson) which is right on the bank of the Maruia river (the Maruia is a well known trout river in the top of the south island with plenty of 3-5lb Brown Trout). They have a modest 3 bedroom farmhouse on the property, which means you can stay close to the action.

Jeff Forsee

Jeff Forsee is a true blue American Kiwi; a photographer and a fly fishing guide. He grew up on the farm ponds of southern Ohio and has come to build a life down under.

Jeff operates Aotearoa Anglers with his business partner Jack Scott from their home base in the quaint mountain town of Wanaka. Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Mike is also an active member of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Board. He guides primarily out of River Birches Lodge which is also situated on the banks of the Tongariro River.

All lunches are supplied along with high quality fishing rods and gear including waders. Mike caters for all levels of experience. He also provides a beginner’s package which includes an introduction to the basics of casting a fly-line and either a full or half day on the river. Rates are available on request.
