Grandad’s love and respect for rivers was infectious and fly fishing soon became an obsession for me too.

Over 35 years I have gained extensive knowledge of local streams, rivers and lakes. Peter Hill

Peter lives at the base of the Te Urewera National Park in the Galatea, Murupara region. With this being his home he has a wide knowledge of rivers and streams that are all under an hours drive. Chris Dore

Chris Dore is a Queenstown based fly fishing guide and well known New Zealand fly fishing personality. Chris Bell

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.

Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.

If the weather dictates better fishing conditions on the South Island’s West Coast, Chris will often be happy to travel across to fish the various lakes of this region even for just a day, to find better sight fishing opportunities for his clients. Chris’s guiding business consistently utilises careful “Catch and Release” even in the lake fisheries to help to protect existing wild fish populations, into which there can sometimes be little recruitment. Roger offers Drift Boat flyfishing.  Fish the edge waters and tributaries of Lake Dunstan or the Poolburn or Manorburn Dams. Dunstan is a one-day trip the Dams have two-day minimum. Hugely popular in the USA & Canada now here in New Zealand.

The drift boat offers you great fishing from a stable platform, great scenery and access to water you could never otherwise get to. Drift boat flyfishing is a great way to get a true, natural drift to your fly, access to water impossible on foot. A day is made up of fishing from the boat, sight fishing the edges.

Tim McCarthy

I first fly-fished the Tongariro River when our family moved to Turangi in the early 1980s. At this time I was still in high school, occasionally cutting class to go fishing! After finishing school, I started guiding with my father in 1984 as well as working at the Turangi Fly Shop Sporting Life. During the early 90s, I started guiding for Tongariro Lodge where I have been Head Guide since 2001.
With the advent of covid I went full circle when the borders closed by returning to Sporting Life and guiding mostly New Zealanders who were rediscovering their love of trout fishing. Lake Brunner is the biggest lake on the West Coast.When fishing Brunner with Brent Beadle the angler has plenty of options to try and out smart the cunning wild browns that cruise the sandy beaches exposing their tails and fins,foraging amongst the weed beds or shoaled up at the river mouths that flow into the lake.Allot of fish are caught sight casting from Brent's boat Sneakuponim as he which he quietly rows around the edges hunting out the browns for the fisherman to set a trap and hook up on these strong lake fish.We use floating lines and catch fish on dries nymphs and streamers.Good numbers of smelt help to fatten up these Brunner beauties.The lake offers some wonderful dry fly fishing from Oct through to April and is open for fishing all year.We hold the record for fly fishing 31 landed to the boat and forty four soft baiting.Spin fishing soft baiting and trolling is on offer.Winter fishing can be productive using any methord.The lake has three rivers that flow into it and these can be fished from the bank.This is the ideal place to fish if you are finding the rivers a bit hard going, if you fish from my boat, you don't even get your feet wet.

Greg and his family own a piece of farmland in Murchison (1.5 hours from Nelson) which is right on the bank of the Maruia river (the Maruia is a well known trout river in the top of the south island with plenty of 3-5lb Brown Trout). They have a modest 3 bedroom farmhouse on the property, which means you can stay close to the action.

Anton Donaldson

Anton Donaldson was one of the pioneers of the South Island flats fishery at Collingwood. He has spent countless hours over several years searching out hard fighting Kingfish in the shallows in Golden Bay. This fishery is one of the best flats fisheries that New Zealand has to offer owing to its 270 degree protection from onshore winds and its amazing clear water. Anton is the ultimate explorer and always has an eye out for fishing opportunities. He is also a very experienced trout guide in the Nelson region where he specialises in sight fishing for large brown trout.  
Anton is a local Golden Bay resident and always has his finger on the pulse of the fishery. His knowledge of tides and where the fish will be at any given time is outstanding.Other species that can be targeted on the flats include Australian Salmon (or Kahawai in New Zealand) and Silver Trevally. There is a fantastic chance here to fish for big brown trout and then hit the flats and chase down a powerful Yellowtail kingfish. A combination trip encompassing both backcountry fly fishing and fly fishing the flats is completely unique.

Craig Aspinall

On leaving school I trained as a carpenter in Wellington, when work moved me to Taupo for a few building projects. Then in the late 80s, I teamed up with my brother Mark Aspinall to guide in the Taupo region. After building up my guiding experience my brother introduced me to Poronui lodge in the early 90s where now I do the bulk of my guiding during the summer fishing season. I am currently the longest serving guide at Poronui and enjoy seeing my repeat clients each season. I have always been loyal to my brother's guiding business where I occasionally team up with him to do some local guiding and back country fishing trips with his clients. We look forward to continuing to do for many years. When I am not working I enjoy: fly tying ,sea fishing,trout fishing, diving and keeping fit.

Jim Perry

Jim is from the Motueka region and has fished it’s most excellent river systems since his early years. “Its my back yard!” Now, having travelled extensively overseas, Jim has returned to raise a family and delights in showing visitors how wonderful our rivers are. “I specialise in stalking and spotting trout so the fish can be appreciated in their natural environment. Emmanuel “Manny” Shchukin

Emmanuel “Manny” Shchukin is based in Nelson, chasing browns and rainbows throughout backcountry water in the top of the south area. A true nature lover, Manny is passionate about finding you beautiful fish in beautiful places and loves sharing Aotearoa New Zealand with local and visiting anglers alike. Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Mike is also an active member of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Board. He guides primarily out of River Birches Lodge which is also situated on the banks of the Tongariro River.

All lunches are supplied along with high quality fishing rods and gear including waders. Mike caters for all levels of experience. He also provides a beginner’s package which includes an introduction to the basics of casting a fly-line and either a full or half day on the river. Rates are available on request.

Nick Reygaert

Nick Reygaert is the founder of Gin-Clear Media & Gin-Clear Travel. 

For the last 15 years, he has carved out a career as a celebrated fly fishing film maker during which time he has traveled extensively in pursuit of the world's best fly fishing. He rates the NZ trout fishery as the most challenging and therefore rewarding fishery in the world.
