Having begun fly fishing at 4 years old on the rivers of Southland under the guidance of his grandfather, Gisborne’s Cory Scott has gone on to win 11X New Zealand Fly Fishing Championships titles, been a part of 6X New Zealand World Championships Teams and has been a Fly Fishing guide for 20 years.

Ronan Creane

I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. We have since filmed another episode for the second series which was big hit, representing the series at the “Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival”. Martin Langlands

Fly Fishing lakes have long been in my blood being very fortunate to have a father who loved fishing lakes. This meant that most weekends in summer we would spend time fishing lakes as a family. Whilst the main focus of my guiding operation is backcountry rivers, lakes can provide fantastic all year round fishing and are a great places to both guide experts and teach beginners.

We are blessed with many different types of lakes from small intimate tarns to large alpine lakes in scenic high country settings, which commonly hold Rainbow and Brown Trout of good size. I also offer two very specialized options: the first being mountain lake Brook Char, a very fun and unique species to target, secondly fishing for large Searun Brown Trout in coastal lakes, lagoons and estuaries. These are some of the largest most impressive wild trout to be found any place in New Zealand that often occur in groups foraging on the many baitfish. We have some streamer fishing that can be nothing short of spectacular but many times we sight fish using Nymphs and at times dry flies.

I take great delight in sharing very innovative and highly original fly and streamer patterns and have several unique techniques that can be used. The angler is bound to learn a lot and take forward some new adaptive approaches . Lake fishing, depending upon the time of year and mood of the day, can involve a mix of both sight and blind fishing using Dry Flies { we get some lush Beetle and Cicada hatches} Nymphs and streamers. Chris owns and operates  Christchurch based “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” where he specialises in sight fishing for large Brown and Rainbow trout in the beautiful Canterbury and Westland regions of the South Island of New Zealand (NZ). Greg Gardiner

The fishing in the Mt. Cook/Mackenzie High Country has been a big part of my life since 1993.  Having cut my guiding teeth growing up fishing, instructing and guiding in the Snowy Mountains in Australia with my father, Mike Spry as my mentor and best mate, to have the opportunity to live and guide in New Zealand was a dream that most anglers would jump at and I was no exception!  I love sharing the waters of the region; spotting fish, nutting out strategies and finally fooling the fish is probably the ultimate way to fish – hunting with a rod.  Whilst conditions don’t always make this style of fishing possible, we have a huge variety of lakes and tarns, rivers of all sizes and streams – from springs to burbling brooks, all available within a short distance of our base which opens up endless opportunities for great fishing.  The scenery we fish in is mind blowing at times and the fish are too!  Nymphing, dry fly and streamer swinging can all feature, each with their own unique styles being employed.  Spry Fly NZ offers day trips and packaged extended stays in the region, of up to a week.

Quentin Donnelly

Growing up in Southland, Quentins formative years were spent along the banks of the Aparima River, or one of the many other world class waters in the province.

Quentin (or “Q” as he is more commonly known) was lucky enough to have a father who put a fly rod in his hands at a very young age, and in doing so has sparked an unrelenting drive to learn about every aspect of the sport.

The pursuit of the ultimate angling experience has seen him travel domestically and internationally chasing both fresh and saltwater species, as well as stimulating a successful progression to other aspects of the craft such as fly tying, rod building, writing and eventually guiding .

Born and raised in Canterbury I was always drawn to water. In fact dad always thought I was part fish. I grew up on the banks of a local river where my grandparents owned a family batch. As a young fella I would often watch grandad and his mates casting dry flies to large brown trout. Grandad’s love and respect for rivers was infectious and fly fishing soon became an obsession for me too.

Over 35 years I have gained extensive knowledge of local streams, rivers and lakes. The Canterbury region offers a multitude of angling opportunities from stalking mountain streams to streamer fishing for sea run trout. Nigel Birt

Mark Aspinall

I started flyfishing in the rivers around the Dunedin district where I was brought up, eventually moving to Taupo to join what was then called the NZ Forest Service as a Ranger Trainee. On leaving the Forest Service I started my own guiding business in the early 80s andin 1987 I joined Simon Dickie and Paddy Clark in the second year of operations at Poronui fishing lodge. There I gained most of my knowledge of the Central North Island back country rivers. Around 1999 I became head guide until Feb 2011 when I left Poronui to concentrate to my own guiding business based out of Taupo. Currently, I have 3 guides on the MA team they are Dave Wood, Duncan Mc Donald and Craig Aspinall. I guide all year round but specialize in back country rivers in the summer time. When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle. Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Ian Cole

Ian Cole is based in picturesque Wanaka which nestles in the very heart of NZ’s Southern Alps. Ian would be the most passionate, experienced and qualified of fly fishing guides in the local area having fly-fished for more than 50 years and throughout many places in the world. He was one of the first NZ guides to qualify as a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor.

Additionally, he is an accomplished fly tyer and teacher. Over the years, his expertise, fisheries knowledge and experience have seen him feature in many magazine articles, videos and books. Ian has enthusiastically guided and up-skilled anglers since 1992 - novice, intermediate and advanced anglers alike. He revels in sharing with others the wonders the NZ South Island fishery offers anglers. He proudly specialises in sight fishing to both large brown and rainbow trout, is a patient guide and teacher who offers top friendly professional service, indeed, the high percentage of repeat clients are a testimony to both his professional skills and happy friendly disposition.

Ian offers enormous flexibility in his guiding service by having intimate knowledge of 3 adjoining areas – Otago, Central South Island and Southland. His day and multi day adventures provide a marvellous spectrum of angling opportunity with a larger number of rivers, streams and lakes to choose from as well as maximising prevailing weather and angling conditions. Nick Reygaert

Nick Reygaert is the founder of Gin-Clear Media & Gin-Clear Travel. 

For the last 15 years, he has carved out a career as a celebrated fly fishing film maker during which time he has traveled extensively in pursuit of the world's best fly fishing. He rates the NZ trout fishery as the most challenging and therefore rewarding fishery in the world.
