Steve Yerex has been fly fishing in the Central North Island for fifteen years. Anton Donaldson

Anton Donaldson was one of the pioneers of the South Island flats fishery at Collingwood. He has spent countless hours over several years searching out hard fighting Kingfish in the shallows in Golden Bay. This fishery is one of the best flats fisheries that New Zealand has to offer owing to its 270 degree protection from onshore winds and its amazing clear water. Anton is the ultimate explorer and always has an eye out for fishing opportunities. Cory Scott

Having begun fly fishing at 4 years old on the rivers of Southland under the guidance of his grandfather, Gisborne’s Cory Scott has gone on to win 11X New Zealand Fly Fishing Championships titles, been a part of 6X New Zealand World Championships Teams and has been a Fly Fishing guide for 20 years.

Neil Goldie is a trout and salmon fishing guide based in Christchurch which is located in the central South Island of New Zealand. Mike Fransham

Mike started flyfishing in the early 80’s in Marlborough. It was initially to escape the rigours of his occupation but flyfishing soon become not only his escape but his passion. After moving to Auckland in the mid 80’s the central North Island rivers became a new escape. Having also lived in Canterbury he also had the privilege of fishing many parts of NZ. In 2015 he was able fulfil a long ambition of living on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Mike specialises in fishing the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo Rivers. When you live on the banks you build a unique affinity and intimacy with the river. It becomes more than just fishing. Mike is also an active member of the Tongariro National Trout Centre Board. He guides primarily out of River Birches Lodge which is also situated on the banks of the Tongariro River.

Miles Rushmer

Miles specializes in both the summer stream mouth, and autumn shoreline trophy rainbow fisheries of the Bay of Plenty

High summer sees some of the shallower lakes in the Bay of Plenty heat up, sending huge numbers of rainbows and monster browns into the cold water spring stream mouths. Shallow wading flats fishing to large schools of trout has to be seen to be believed, with Jan/Feb/Mar being prime season. Suitable for the beginner to catch their first trout, or the expert looking to hone technique or target the monster browns.

Then in Autumn the trophy rainbows return to their release points in April/May/June/July. These are without doubt the biggest rainbows taken off the North Island each year. It is shore based fly fishing, usually from your deck chair on the beach, and can be described as completely relaxing, yet explosive, with fish up to 15lb's being encountered. Chris Bell

Fly fishing for trout in Canterbury and on the West Coast’s many still-water lakes and tarns can be a fun and memorable experience for the visiting angler. Chris from “South Island Adventure Fly Fishing” can take you to fish some of the best still-waters in both nearby regions to target Brown, Rainbow and Brook trout, using a variety of different fishing techniques. Many of these waters are less pressured fisheries compared to a lot of the rivers and streams, and often you will find you are the only angler on the water on any given day.

Chris specialises in spotting and casting to cruising trout along shallow lake margins, sometimes shallow enough to cause the trout’s dorsal fins and tails to break the water’s surface. This close quarter’s sight fishing is heart stopping stuff and is often compared to bone fishing in the tropics, but is instead located in a freshwater environment on shallow sand and mud flats. Trout typically average around 2.5-4lbs but some fisheries have larger fish on average, with 5 - 6.5 pounders and the occasional larger fish being targeted and caught. Casting dry-fly’s and nymphs to sighted fish is exhilarating stuff and is usually the favoured fishing method, however on occasion blind fishing with nymphs or streamers can sometimes be the most efficient method to target some sections of water, not to mention a very relaxing and effective method of fishing some lakes.

If the weather dictates better fishing conditions on the South Island’s West Coast, Chris will often be happy to travel across to fish the various lakes of this region even for just a day, to find better sight fishing opportunities for his clients. Fly Fishing lakes have long been in my blood being very fortunate to have a father who loved fishing lakes. This meant that most weekends in summer we would spend time fishing lakes as a family. Whilst the main focus of my guiding operation is backcountry rivers, lakes can provide fantastic all year round fishing and are a great places to both guide experts and teach beginners.

We are blessed with many different types of lakes from small intimate tarns to large alpine lakes in scenic high country settings, which commonly hold Rainbow and Brown Trout of good size. I also offer two very specialized options: the first being mountain lake Brook Char, a very fun and unique species to target, secondly fishing for large Searun Brown Trout in coastal lakes, lagoons and estuaries. These are some of the largest most impressive wild trout to be found any place in New Zealand that often occur in groups foraging on the many baitfish. We have some streamer fishing that can be nothing short of spectacular but many times we sight fish using Nymphs and at times dry flies.

I take great delight in sharing very innovative and highly original fly and streamer patterns and have several unique techniques that can be used. The angler is bound to learn a lot and take forward some new adaptive approaches . Lake fishing, depending upon the time of year and mood of the day, can involve a mix of both sight and blind fishing using Dry Flies { we get some lush Beetle and Cicada hatches} Nymphs and streamers. I am happy to supply all gear and cater for all levels and have all year round options .

Our powered Stealth Craft 16-54 Pro-Power Drifter Sled is unique to New Zealand. Built in the USA by Stealth Craft Boats in Baldwin, Michigan. Powered by a 70-40 Mercury outboard jet-unit so you can fish in safety and comfort.

At sixteen feet long and seven feet wide and with two stand-up casting braces, it’s a roomy and comfortable casting platform. The centre rowing seat allows our guides to control the boat as we drift downstream. Three padded seats make for a comfortable & dry day when traveling to and from the fishing, there is a dry locker to keep our clients' gear safe and dry.

The jet unit enables travel both up and down-stream, fishing some glides a second time to catch that elusive trout. The Shallow draught of our Pro Drifter Sled enables us to motor or row across water only a few inches deep

When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle. Nigel Birt

Having worked professionally as a fly-fishing guide and instructor since 1988, his knowledge of the sport is outstanding. Now a founding co-owner of Backcountry New Zealand, Nigel was trained at an early age by professional guides and served his apprenticeship at a top New Zealand fishing lodge. Through his experiences Nigel has developed skills and knowledge that competes with New Zealand's best, has been adventuring in the outdoors since the age of eight years old and tying fishing flies since he was twelve. Backcountry New Zealand provides visitors to New Zealand with quality angling and hunting experiences to suit their requirements. Backcountry NZ consists of guides with an intimate knowledge of both the East and West coast fisheries of the South Island. Fishing style is largely sight fishing for brown and rainbow trout with increased opportunities for anglers with above average fitness abilities. Brent Beadle

Brent Beadle is based at Moana on the shores of beautiful Lake Brunner where the trout die of old age and has been guiding around the Lake Brunner area for 15 years. All his boats have a current survey and Brent has Department of Conservation permits to fish the area. Brent often drifts the lake edge sight casting to prime fish as well as helifishing trips, a great way to fish the head waters of the regions rivers and overnight stays in wilderness river valleys with excellent accommodation available if required. Hi I’m Dyl from Trout Fix Nz,

I am based in Otorohanga West Coast of the North Island and guide the Waikato, King Country and Bay of Plenty areas. I’ve spent years learning the river systems and fisheries and know the waters well.

From low land streams to the amazing backcountry rivers Nz has to offer, I'm here to help you have a great day/days out. I’m happy to take out beginners right through to well seasoned anglers.

I have a passion for all styles of fly fishing but have a particular love for dry fly dropper fishing in small tributaries chasing both brown and rainbow trout. 

A bit about me I am born and bred in New Zealand I’ve been fishing since I was old enough to hold a rod and that fishing addiction turned in to fly fishing over the years. My love for fly fishing has taken me all around the beautiful country of New Zealand and abroad.

Once becoming a seasoned angler in fly fishing, I found a love of teaching and seeing my friends and family catching fish on a fly rod in some of New Zealand's amazing locations that fly fishing takes us. So of course guiding professionally came along as no surprise. I have modest accommodation available in Otorohanga if required, there is some gear and rod hire available also if needed.
