Nick King

Nick King is based in St Arnaud at the gateway to Nelson Lakes National park. He has been guiding in the mountains and waters of the top of the South Island since pre-internet days and some of what he has observed in the intervening decades has managed to stick between his ears. Wilderness trips strike a chord with him and the wild native places far from the madding crowd are his speciality.

Martin Langlands

Fly Fishing lakes have long been in my blood being very fortunate to have a father who loved fishing lakes. This meant that most weekends in summer we would spend time fishing lakes as a family. Whilst the main focus of my guiding operation is backcountry rivers, lakes can provide fantastic all year round fishing and are a great places to both guide experts and teach beginners.

We are blessed with many different types of lakes from small intimate tarns to large alpine lakes in scenic high country settings, which commonly hold Rainbow and Brown Trout of good size. I also offer two very specialized options: the first being mountain lake Brook Char, a very fun and unique species to target, secondly fishing for large Searun Brown Trout in coastal lakes, lagoons and estuaries. These are some of the largest most impressive wild trout to be found any place in New Zealand that often occur in groups foraging on the many baitfish. We have some streamer fishing that can be nothing short of spectacular but many times we sight fish using Nymphs and at times dry flies.

I take great delight in sharing very innovative and highly original fly and streamer patterns and have several unique techniques that can be used. The angler is bound to learn a lot and take forward some new adaptive approaches . Lake fishing, depending upon the time of year and mood of the day, can involve a mix of both sight and blind fishing using Dry Flies { we get some lush Beetle and Cicada hatches} Nymphs and streamers. I am happy to supply all gear and cater for all levels and have all year round options .

Kahawai cruise the shallows busting up endless shoals of bait fish, these fish really snatch at the fly, jump repeatedly and fight as hard as any... pound for pound.

Nigel Birt

Having worked professionally as a fly-fishing guide and instructor since 1988, his knowledge of the sport is outstanding. Growing up in Southland, Quentins formative years were spent along the banks of the Aparima River, or one of the many other world class waters in the province.

Quentin (or “Q” as he is more commonly known) was lucky enough to have a father who put a fly rod in his hands at a very young age, and in doing so has sparked an unrelenting drive to learn about every aspect of the sport.

The pursuit of the ultimate angling experience has seen him travel domestically and internationally chasing both fresh and saltwater species, as well as stimulating a successful progression to other aspects of the craft such as fly tying, rod building, writing and eventually guiding .

With medium size  rivers such as the Oreti, Mataura, Aparima and the Waiau at his doorstep as well as the many other small streams and stillwater options available in the province he can cater for all skill levels, weather conditions and abilities.

Ronan Creane

I started fly fishing at the age of 12 and have been completely immersed in it since. I have fished all over the South Island, particularly in Otago for the last 16 years. As a recreational angler I would fish about 140 days a year, always with adventurous attitude. In 2015 I decided it was time to put that experience to good use, so I became a full time fly fishing guide. I was born in Ireland but visited New Zealand on a one year working holiday visa in 2002. That was it, I was hooked! I returned every October for the following 9 years for 6 months at a time.. just to fish! I also fished much of the globe during those explorative years.

In 2011 I made New Zealand my home. Lake fishing was a big part of my life in Ireland and I've adapted many Irish tactics to suit New Zealand lakes and rivers. I have written about fly fishing for over 10 years with most of that effort going into my very active blog. In 2005 I was one of the first anglers in New Zealand to receive the Casting Instructor Certificate from the Federation of Fly Fishers. I continue to teach fly casting today. In 2008 I was the co-host for a Discovery Channel fly fishing TV show called "Fish This", while more recently took the lime light with Jeff Forsee in "Pure Fly New Zealand" which aired for the first time in October 2016. We have since filmed another episode for the second series which was big hit, representing the series at the “Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival”. Lake Brunner is the biggest lake on the West Coast.When fishing Brunner with Brent Beadle the angler has plenty of options to try and out smart the cunning wild browns that cruise the sandy beaches exposing their tails and fins,foraging amongst the weed beds or shoaled up at the river mouths that flow into the lake.Allot of fish are caught sight casting from Brent's boat Sneakuponim as he which he quietly rows around the edges hunting out the browns for the fisherman to set a trap and hook up on these strong lake fish.We use floating lines and catch fish on dries nymphs and streamers.Good numbers of smelt help to fatten up these Brunner beauties.The lake offers some wonderful dry fly fishing from Oct through to April and is open for fishing all year.We hold the record for fly fishing 31 landed to the boat and forty four soft baiting.Spin fishing soft baiting and trolling is on offer.Winter fishing can be productive using any methord.The lake has three rivers that flow into it and these can be fished from the bank.This is the ideal place to fish if you are finding the rivers a bit hard going, if you fish from my boat, you don't even get your feet wet.

Our powered Stealth Craft 16-54 Pro-Power Drifter Sled is unique to New Zealand. Built in the USA by Stealth Craft Boats in Baldwin, Michigan. Powered by a 70-40 Mercury outboard jet-unit so you can fish in safety and comfort.

I first fly-fished the Tongariro River when our family moved to Turangi in the early 1980s. At this time I was still in high school, occasionally cutting class to go fishing! After finishing school, I started guiding with my father in 1984 as well as working at the Turangi Fly Shop Sporting Life. During the early 90s, I started guiding for Tongariro Lodge where I have been Head Guide since 2001.
With the advent of covid I went full circle when the borders closed by returning to Sporting Life and guiding mostly New Zealanders who were rediscovering their love of trout fishing. Now the borders are open I am again back to guiding full time. Having over 35 years guiding experience I provide for all levels of fly-fishing ability – from novice anglers to seasoned veterans. Being based in Turangi not only gives us access to the local Taupo rivers but also back country areas. Jeff Forsee and Jack Scott

Jeff Forsee and Jack Scott of Aotearoa Anglers in Wanaka offer a unique still-water fishing experience from their purpose-built NRS fishing rafts. Fishing the lake edges for cruising trout from the comfort of the raft is both fun and effective.

These oar powered craft offer a stealthy and peaceful approach to a day on the water. Rafts also give access to deeper channels, weed beds, muddy flats, and hidden corners that are otherwise difficult or impossible to reach on foot. They also provide a comfortable platform and a height advantage for sight fishing, similar to the experience of fishing for bonefish from a flats skiff.

We employ a variety of tactics, from nymphs and dry flies to the classic wooly bugger. You'll actively fish from the boat as your guide skillfully navigates through the most productive waters. Along with the fishing, taking in the breathtaking scenery of Central Otago from the raft is an experience in itself.

We welcome fly fishermen and spin anglers of all skill levels, from beginners to experts. Our rafts are suitable for anglers of all fitness levels, accommodating up to two anglers per raft, with a maximum group size of four across our two rafts.

Both Jack and Jeff are accredited New Zealand Raft Association guides, with current swift water rescue certifications and high-level outdoor first aid training. They are also proudly certified by AdventureMark, the highest safety accreditation for adventure activities in New Zealand.

Hans Kreuer

Hi, I'm Hans Kreuer, your fly fishing guide based in Nelson. I have a passion for helping anglers of all abilities achieve their angling dreams, ensuring they have a great trip by working as hard as I can. I have a relaxed style and am able to draw upon decades of fly fishing experience, both overseas (and the last 13 years) here in New Zealand. I take pride in the hand crafted flies I tie to give my clients the edge, and give help where needed with casting and general river skills, to help turn chance into reality. I like a laugh on the river and even a beer later if that takes your fancy. Overnight camping and multi-day road trips are my favourites as they allow time for a bond between guide and client to form, and also to add variety to your valuable fishing time. Single day trips are also a great option with a myriad of rivers available within a short drive of my Nelson base.

Brent Beadle

Brent Beadle is based at Moana on the shores of beautiful Lake Brunner where the trout die of old age and has been guiding around the Lake Brunner area for 15 years. All his boats have a current survey and Brent has Department of Conservation permits to fish the area. Brent often drifts the lake edge sight casting to prime fish as well as helifishing trips, a great way to fish the head waters of the regions rivers and overnight stays in wilderness river valleys with excellent accommodation available if required. When all the rivers are blown and the weather conditions are dreadful we still have an amazing opportunity to fish and have a great day or two. Canterbury, North Canterbury and the West Coast, were we can transport you in a well maintained late model 4WD, have many lakes fishable from the shore, some offering year-round angling. Surely it will test your ability to spot, cast, entice the trout but also and most importantly the strike.

The lake fishing in New Zealand is exciting, fun and rewarding; the fish living in still waters are powerful, fast and cunning. By mid December damsels and dragonflies are plentiful and seeing Brownies jumping 2 feet out of the water to catch one of these provokes an exceptional adrenaline rush. There are lakes around the region within an hour driving and the methods we use go from indicator which is generally as dry fly and a suspended nymph, spotting the fish walking along the lake margins while casting a dry fly or a nymph, or streamers.

We will not take you to crowded big lakes, as we would rather offer you the wilderness of remote smaller pieces of water where an encounter with other anglers is rare. Fish size in such lakes varies from 2 to 3 lbs and you could catch a couple of dozens fish a day, to larger fish up to 6/7 lbs. Those brown trout are big fighters and have a tendency to offer a magnificent spectacle with jumps and back flips and only surrender after a long battle.
